11/20/2008 - Indians Edge Franklin Regional
In a game that was eerily reminiscent of the Indians last home game against a
2007/2008 Penguin Cup Finalist, Peters found themselves down by 2 goals before
the 1st period was in the books. But, unlike their game against Penguin
Cup champion Latrobe, the Indians were able to overcome the early deficit on
their way to an exciting 4-3 victory against Franklin Regional at the Iceoplex
last night. After spotting the Panthers that 2 goal lead, the Indians
began to climb back on the strength of a ferocious forecheck and stellar
goaltending from Junior Matt Madore that snuffed out several good Franklin
Regional chances.
The Indians cut the deficit to 2-1 late in the 1st period when Sean
McLaughlin knocked home a loose puck lying on the doorstep. McLaughlin's
goal was assisted by Julian Scheirer and Drew Rubeo and came after a hard
working shift from that unit.
Peters thought they had tied the game late in the first period when Griffin
Burgman snapped a shot over the Panther netminder's outstretched glove on a
delayed penalty call against FR only to have the referees disallow the apparent
tying goal. The Indians disappointment was short lived however as shortly
into the 2nd period, Jake Boss and Paul Henney capitalized on a 2 on 1 break to
tie the game at 2. Boss carried the puck into the Panther zone and
saucered a pass to a streaking Henney. Henney made no mistake as he lifted
the water bottle with a beautiful top shelf shot. Defenseman Ryan Tingle
picked up an assist on the play.
The Indians put themselves in a good spot to take the lead midway through the
2nd period by getting a power play opportunity. That opportunity
backfired, temporarily, as Panther Eugene Mack used his quickness to escape on a
shorthanded breakaway chance that he was able to convert for a 3-2 Panther
lead. Peters quickly tied the game on that very same power play when after
sustained pressure in the Panther zone, Jake Boss fired a laser past the FR
goalie on assists from Kevin Hough and Jake Achenbach.
The Indians came out after the ice cut determined to take the lead for the
first time in the game. The 3rd period featured high tempo back and forth
action that saw numerous opportunities and numerous big-time stops by both
goaltenders. Peters eventually got the game winning goal when Seniors
Collin Fawcett and Greg Jackson combined on a 2 on 1 with about 9 minutes left
in the game. Jackson found Fawcett alone above the left faceoff circle and
Fawcett buried a wrister for a 4-3 Indian lead.
Matt Madore played a strong game in net for the Indians, stopping 31 of 34
Panther shots, many in spectacular fashion, to pick up the victory. Peters
put up 31 shots against FR in this evenly matched game.
The Indians next game is on Monday 11/24 against Greater Latrobe at the Kirk
Nevin arena in Greensburg at 9:15.
11/13/2008 - Peters Ekes Out Win on the Road
Playing their second game in the same week for the first time this season,
the Indians barely eked out a 6-5 come from ahead victory against Greensburg
Central Catholic in Greensburg. Goal scorers for the Indians were: Collin
Fawcett, Julian Scheirer, Greg Jackson, Drew Rubeo, Griffin Burgman, and Jake
Boss. Collecting assists on the evening were: Dave Brown (3),
Jackson, Burgman, Scheirer, and Drew Williams. Woody Shell picked up the
victory in net for the Indians.
Peters Township's next game is against Franklin Regional on 11/20/2008 at the
Iceoplex.
11/10/2008 - Indians Fall to Latrobe
Peters Township faced off against the defending PA State Champion Greater
Latrobe Wildcats last night and came away on the short end of 4-2 decision at
the Iceoplex at Southpointe. Latrobe put the Indians on their heels early
in the first period by cashing in on a fluky deflection for a quick 1-0
lead. Latrobe continued to put the pressure on the Indians, cashing in 2
more times in the first period to take a 3-0 lead before Peters found their
stride and decided to make a game out of it. Defenseman Paul Henney got
things started for Peters by taking a pass from Griffin Burgman and carrying the puck into the Latrobe zone.
Henney snapped off a hard shot that beat the Latrobe netminder to cut the score to
3-1 before the 1st period ended.
The Indians started the 2nd period on a power play and continued to control
the action as they worked hard to get back into the game. Their efforts
were rewarded when Kevin Hough scored on a backhander from heavy traffic in
front to make it a 3-2 contest. Reilly Moore and Jake Boss picked up
assists on Hough's goal. Despite repeated opportunities, the
Indians could not get another puck past the Latrobe goaltender and had to settle
for a hard fought loss against the defending Penguin Cup and PA State Champions.
11/3/2008 - A Thriller in the Garden
The Peters Township / Thomas Jefferson rivalry is one of the most intense in
the PIHL. The old adage that "you can throw away the records when
these teams meet" is almost always true in this series. Last night
was no different as the undefeated Indians struggled to pull out an overtime
victory against the Jaguars at the historic Rostraver Ice Garden. The
Jaguars got on the board early in the first period when they capitalized on an
Indian turnover in the slot and snapped a shot over Sophomore netminder Woody
Shell for a 1-0 lead. The remainder of the first period was a spirited,
back and forth, physical contest as these perennial rivals slugged it out toe to
toe. Dave Rigatti evened the score in the second period for Peters when he
capped an exciting end to end rush by firing a laser past the TJ netminder for
an unassisted goal.
Peters upped the pressure after the ice cut, outshooting the Jaguars 10-2 in
the third period but in spite of several good opportunities, just couldn't solve
the TJ netminder. With the score tied at the end of regulation, the
Indians were hit with a penalty midway through the 5 minute overtime.
Woody Shell made several outstanding saves while Peters was killing the penalty
to keep the Indians alive, including a sliding leg pad save on a TJ sniper left
alone in the slot. After getting back to even strength, Dave Rigatti again
started things rolling for the Indians. RIgatti gained the TJ zone and
fired a shot on goal that was deflected into the corner by the TJ netminder.
Cody Gubala dug the puck out of the corner and fired a pass across the crease to
Collin Fawcett. Fawcett snapped off a shot that was stopped by the TJ
netminder but Griffin Burgman was on the doorstep to bury the game winner with just 0:27 seconds remaining in
OT.
Shell stopped 21 of 22 TJ shots to gain the victory for the Indians.
Peters next game is Monday, November 10th at the Iceoplex against defending
Penguin Cup and Pa State Champs Greater Latrobe.
10/31/2008 - Halloween frightful for visiting Kittanning
The Kittanning Wildcats made a Halloween evening visit to the Iceoplex to
take on the Indians and soon found out that Peters had a house of horrors
waiting for them. Kittanning, whose roster was depleted by a number of
players serving suspensions for a brawl in their prior game, put up a spirited
fight but couldn't slow down the Indians in their home opener. Peters
scored early and often on their way to a 10-1 victory. Peters was led by
David Rigatti, Collin Fawcett and Jake Achenbach with 2 goals apiece. Also scoring for the
Indians were Jake Boss, Kevin Hough, AJ Hume and Julian Scheirer. Cody Gubala
and Griffin Burgman chipped in with 2 assists apiece. Junior netminder
Matt Madore was strong in net, stopping 25 of 26 Wildcat shots to pick up the
victory.
10/20/2008 - The Long Journey Begins
The Peters Township Indians hockey club made the short trip out Interstate 70
to Wesbanco Arena in Wheeling to open the 2008/2009 season against the defending
Nailer Cup champs Wheeling Central Catholic. The Indians debuted their new
red road uniforms for the first time in a regular season game and played a
strong, disciplined game against a tough WCC team. After a scoreless first
period, Senior forward Dave Brown flipped in the first goal of the season at
9:19 of the second period off of some hard work behind the net from linemates
Junior Cody Gubala and Senior Julian Scheirer. After WCC tied the game at
1, Gubala put the Indians out in front with 2 goals only 25 seconds apart to put
Peters ahead for good. Gubala's first goal was assisted by Scheirer and
Junior Paul Henney, while Scheirer picked up his 3rd assist of the game on
Gubala's second goal. Senior forward Griffin Burgman made the score 4-1
when he buried a feed from Senior Colin Fawcett with 1:58 to go in the 3rd
period.
Junior Kevin Hough converted a nice pass from behind the net from Junior Jake
Boss for the fifth Peters goal, Sophomore Jake Achenbach also picked up an
assist on Hough's goal. Senior Greg Jackson closed out the scoring at the
0:20 second mark of the final period when he converted an Achenbach feed, Boss
picked up the second assist on Jackson's goal.
Junior netminder Tyler Borne picked up the win for Peters. Peters
outshot WCC 40-14. The Indians next game is their home opener against
Kittanning on Halloween night at the Iceoplex at Southpointe.
